Courage

One thing in common, have these things below.

Yet all are different, it seems, I know.

To fight a battle.  To accept change.

To receive help, or a future re-arrange.

To forgive wrongs.  To face a new day.

To ask for help.  To love—come what may.

To be honest or brave despite personal cost.

To pursue past connection in relationships lost.

To live with pain, or to die with hope.   1.

To help the helpless.  Tackle too large a scope.

To take big risks, and embrace sacrifice.

To admit a mistake.  Say, “I’m sorry,” twice.

To be kind to others when it’s hard to smile.

Repay evil with good, or go the “extra mile.”   2.,  3.

To walk by faith when you can’t see what’s ahead,   4.

Or to go anyway, when you DO see where you’re led.

All take COURAGE—a quiet resolve,

to do what is right, though escape loudly calls.

3.  Matthew 5:41

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert

to be tempted by the devil.            (Matthew 4:1)

Desert

Who changed the scenery from lush to dry?

Who turned up the heat, so that I would fry?

What did I do to be led to this place…

A desert of suff’ring, with no joy or grace?

A desert of waiting for answers to prayer—

For friends to sustain and show that they care.

A desert of loneliness—I have to cross

So the Master Refiner can melt off the dross.

Will I make it out alive? Or, die…

In a sea of exhaustion, wondering, “Why?”

Blinded by sandstorms of needless pain,

Thirsting for hope in a land without rain.

Dear Jesus went to the desert, too...

For testing concerning God’s Word that He knew.

He was led by the Spirit to that dreadful place.

To prepare Him for ministry, when Satan He faced.

So, remember—tough times can be used for gain.

And, Jesus has conquered the land without rain.

As He was led in, He was also led out.

I too, will emerge, I must believe, not doubt.

The Journey

Your hand in mine, I feel it now—

With comfort and relief, I bow—

Acceptance of Your will has come.

A different way than others planned—

Or, even I could understand—

But, chords of peace you gently strum.

In the distance, the Lion roars—

I shudder, but squeeze your hand once more—

You are with me, come what may.

You know my name, You quietly call—

You lead through forest, and over the wall—

I follow Your voice through the fray.

Still trudging on with holy fear—

The Word of God ringing in my ear—

I feel you draw me close.

Again, the Lion roars, now near—

He strikes!  …eliciting blood and tears—

I know you are hurt the most.

You take the blow with silent dread—

I gasp, then see my Savior dead!

            The battle spells disaster.

With overweening glee and pride—

His victim lying by his side—

He claims my Lord and Master.

Then, resurrection before my eyes!

My Savior lives! …to fight, to rise

Above the prince of this world.

Death has no sting, the grave—no power,

O’er Jesus’ plan in this, His hour—

            Divine glory…unfurled.

The Lion retreats, in anger, defeat—

Judgment and demise, soon to meet.

To the path again, my Lord drives.

Once more we travel, hand in hand.

I follow to His will and command.

            Our destination, sure to arrive.

Night Wars

Sleeping is surrender—

A defeat as sure as death.

The day is gone and spent,

Cut off, forever.

Time is ticking.

Spiritual goals are not achieved—

Prayer’s agony goes unrelieved—

The world, unfixed, remains.

White flag goes up—sleep comes.

Mourning turns into morning.

The adversary clock commands:

“At dawn, all soldiers arise!”

Troops regroup.  Reinforcements arrive.

I am not alone in the battle.

Hope is revived;  love is rekindled;

Faith rises with the Son.

The Father’s Plan

Trials hard to take and yet,

The Father has a plan I bet.

Satan pouts, as friends all see—

Jesus’ power perfected in me. 1.

Spiritual Battle

Just over that next hill, you know,

            That Satan will retreat.

It is not long before he will

            Concede his sure defeat.

He cannot chain the captives

Whom Lord Jesus has set free. 1.

He cannot stop the Gospel which

            Advances forcefully. 2.

He may delay, threaten or wound

            The soldier for the Lord

But the prayers of the saints

            Will soon see their reward.

Greater is He who is in you

Than he who roams this earth. 3.

Our Helper and defender will not

            Soon forget your worth. 4.

The Lord sees all your turmoil,

            Disappointments, all your sorrow.

He plans to use it for your good 5.

            And eternity’s gain, tomorrow.

Before too long your adversary

            Will give up in shame.

He can’t defeat God’s Word

When you endure, in Jesus’ name.

Resist the devil, pray for deliverance, 6.

            Climb that hill in faith.

Run in such a way that you

Like Paul, might “win the race!” 7.

What Life is About…

Is life about achievements,

A vacation, or a job?

Is life about survival—

An early grave to rob?

Are we here to teach our kids

How to grow up, work and die—

So that they can do the same?

To the “rat race” all comply?

No, no!  Life is not just

A routine to perform—

Or, a scheme to “get ahead”

As we to the world, conform.

There is a higher standard,

A goal for which to strive—

A daily task to do, and

With all my heart contrive…

To shower tenderness upon

Each person whom I meet.

As I listen, talk or help,

Kindness and love, my work complete.

Is this not what Saint Paul said?

“All true greatness comes from love.” 1.

Jesus said all acts of kindness

Are rewarded up above. 2.

Yes!  This gives life a sweetness

Which hardships cannot erase.

When someone gives unselfishly,

His gift is not a waste.

And life is more than giving,

Even more than doing good.

It is caring about people

From the heart, as Jesus would.

Lord, help me really live—and

Do what life is about:

To lift up others, serve with joy,

To love, ‘til my strength gives out.

Hope for a Faint Heart

“God is the strength of my heart…” 1.

I hear the Scriptures say.

My faint soul may be fortified

When in Him I delight and obey.

Inner strength comes from trusting

That He always hears my prayers. 2.

He knows my frame is dust 3.

And He gladly takes my cares. 4.

“He who did not spare His own Son…

Graciously gives us all things,” 5.

Ample faith and hope and love

For whatever challenges life brings.

“He hems me in—behind and before” 6.

So I’ll know the way of His will.

He sets “the days ordained for me” 7.

Then “prepares good works”  I fulfill. 8.

“According to His riches” in His Son 9.

My needs are met—

Contentment, courage, character

Are needs He’ll not forget.

All I must do is ask Him, and

Though broken, yet believe… 10.

The Holy Spirit’s power

Is the strength I then receive. 11.

Life is Hard

Life is hard

Most every day.

Filled with labor

Bills to pay.

Filled with news

Shocking and sad.

Stressful people

Harsh and mad.

Filled with those who

Break their word,

Who disappoint or

Repeat what they’ve heard.

Life is hard

Chores never end.

Aches and illness

Are unwanted friends.

Burdened mind

Can’t carry the load.

Jesus points to a

Different road.

“Come to Me

I will give you rest.

Take my yoke 1.

When you feel stressed.”

“Learn from Me

My burden is light.

Your soul will find rest 2.

From your temporal fight.”

Do Not Lose Heart

   (a song)

Jesus is calling, His truth to impart:

Calling, “Children, do not lose heart!” 1.

“You’ve been given a life-time task—a mission to pursue. 2.

My Words must go to the ends of the earth, before I return for you.” 3.

“Run with endurance—fight the good fight. 4.

I am your Lord, your God, ‘the way, the truth, the life.’ ” 5.

Jesus is calling, His truth to impart:

Calling, “Children, do not lose heart!” 1.

“The Thief longs to snare you—your witness to destroy. 6.

The Holy Spirit will sustain you, if His power you employ.” 7.

“There is a heavenly home awaiting you. 8.

Peace, joy, and eternal love—I’ll soon share with you.” 9.

Jesus is calling, His truth to impart:

Calling, “Children, do not lose heart!” 1.

His Servants

Many are the nights

When candles burn and thoughts are slow.

Yet persevering (for the love of Him),

            Again, the dear saints go.

Pushing past their limits,

Fighting off the sighs and tears—

Clinging desperately to Scripture,

And the One who hovers near,

Needs seem to surround them,

            Many faces sweet and frail—

Ever knocking for a word of hope,

            Inspiring thought or tale.

When the well seems to run empty—

How on earth do they go on?

Where do His precious children

Find the strength to sing His song?

Only fellow pilgrims answer—

            Because they alone can know:

The Spirit pours out living waters, 1.

Stokes the embers of love’s glow.

Perhaps a word, perhaps a gesture,

Serves to build, caress and kiss—

The humble prayer to be His vessel,

To fulfill the soul’s one wish.

Ever grateful for His giving,

And for mercies always new— 2.

His servants pause and listen,

            Then persist—His will to do.
